Since 1969, the Griffin-Spalding Historical Society has been a driving force in preserving and promoting the architectural, cultural, and historical heritage of our community. Our work goes beyond remembering the past, we actively safeguard it, ensuring it continues to shape our identity, inspire community pride, and fuel economic vitality.
Whether through hands-on preservation, educational programs, advocacy, or partnerships, we are committed to protecting the places and stories that make Griffin-Spalding unique.
What We Do
We work year-round to safeguard our community’s heritage and to make it relevant for generations to come.
Historic Preservation & Advocacy
Advise local government agencies and preservation commissions.
Nominate endangered sites to the Georgia Trust’s Places in Peril program.
Support restoration projects such as the Rosenwald School and the Griffin-Spalding African-American History Museum: Our Legacy Museum.
Lead initiatives to protect historic properties, from residential homes to landmark civic buildings.
Architectural & Archival Expertise
Provide guidance on historic preservation projects.
Maintain and digitize our historical library and archives.
Offer resources to help property owners restore and reuse authentic materials.
Education & Genealogy
Host luncheons, lectures, and programs on local history.
Manage the Southside Genealogical Society to help families trace their roots.
Plan preservation-based educational programs for local students.
Community Engagement
Partner with civic groups such as the Junior Guild and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Operate volunteer-led action committees.
Organize networking events to connect people passionate about preservation.
Current & Ongoing Initiatives
Our members, volunteers, and sponsors make possible a wide range of projects, including:
Historic Plaque Program – Recognizing properties of architectural and historical significance.
Local Slave Dwellings Preservation – Restoring one of the few surviving slave cabins in Central Georgia, located at our Bailey-Tebault House.
Rare Materials Preservation – Cataloging and advising on historic building materials to encourage reuse in restoration projects.
New Historic District Development – Working with consultants to identify and establish a new residential historic district.
Historic Griffin-Spalding Foundation Revolving Fund – Expanding our ability to save at-risk historic properties.
Film & Tourism Promotion – Encouraging production and heritage tourism in Griffin-Spalding.
