About Camp Stephens

Located just north of Griffin, Camp Alexander H. Stephens was an important military mobilization and training site during the Civil War. Named for Georgia politician Alexander H. Stephens, who served as Vice President of the Confederacy, the camp was one of the principal locations where Georgia infantry units were organized, equipped, and trained before departing for service.

Camp Stephens was part of a larger military presence in Griffin during the war. Nearby Camp Milner served as a mobilization and training site for cavalry, while Griffin itself became an important hospital and transportation center. Numerous Georgia units passed through Camp Stephens, including the 27th, 28th, and 44th Georgia Infantry Regiments.

Today, the surviving earthworks and landscape of Camp Stephens offer a rare physical connection to this period of Georgia's history. The Griffin-Spalding Historical Society believes these remains should be preserved to ensure that future generations can study and understand the Civil War in its full historical context.

Preserving Camp Stephens allows us to protect the evidence of what happened here, including the difficult and complicated history surrounding the Civil War, while creating opportunities for education, interpretation, and honest conversation about Georgia's past.

Thank You

If we are unable to meet the full match through donations, the Society may need to cover the remaining amount from our own limited funds in order to secure the grant. While we are committed to moving this project forward, your support ensures that more of our resources can go directly toward preservation work.

Every dollar you give will be matched dollar-for-dollar for this specific project, doubling the impact of your contribution. We hope you will consider helping us reach our $3,000 goal and take the first major step in restoring Camp Stephens.
